Abstract:
The Italian power grid is being reinforced with High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission systems for more stable transmission of electrical power. In this paper, an HVDC project which connects the Italian and Montenegrin power grids will be introduced. The project connects the two power grids across the Adriatic Sea via a submarine cable of more than 400 km in length, and will transmit maximum 1.2 GW of electrical power after completion. Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation has provided also the HVDC control and protection systems for the converter stations at both of the ends, which were ordered by Terna Rete Italia S.p.A..
