Abstract:
This presentation provides a detailed overview of the design and validation process of Fixed Series Capacitors (FSCs) implemented at the Kayabaşı and Ürgüp substations, which were commissioned in 2019 and 2021, respectively. The primary objective of the project was to address and mitigate operational issues encountered with the FSCs, such as faulty bypass incidents, spark gap damage, and performance degradation due to environmental conditions and electromagnetic interference. To validate the design and operational reliability of these capacitor banks, comprehensive real-time digital simulation (RTDS) tests were conducted, simulating various operational scenarios, including transient overvoltage (TOV), transient recovery voltage (TRV), and sub-synchronous resonance (SSR) conditions.
The presentation highlights the technical specifications of the equipment, the RTDS test configurations, and the challenges faced in the field during both commissioning and routine operation. Additionally, it discusses the corrective measures implemented, particularly improvements in protection systems and control schemes. The findings underscore the importance of adhering to international standards and propose recommendations for future applications of FSCs in high-voltage transmission systems, with a focus on enhancing system reliability and reducing the risk of operational failures.
