The power system in India is facing deficiency of power generation and facing power surge on national grid. To overcome the issue of instability and to support grid, STACOM or SVC is very helpful. STATCOM has more advantage over SVC (Static VAR Compensation) like less harmonics generation, no need of filter circuit and compact design attracts customer for use of STATCOM technology. It provides fast voltage support and transient stability related to the interconnections and faults on network.
The control & protection of STATCOM is based on the state-of-the-art automation system SIEMENS SIMATIC TDC. In this paper the basic control & protection principles of STATCOM have been described. The description consists of overall control & protection strategies such as over-voltage control, under-voltage Control, power oscillation damping control, reactive power control, negative phase sequence control and converter protection system. The large AC Equivalent network is implemented in Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) including the generators and different types of load Like PQ/shunt/capacitive have been considered and the modelling of STATCOM as a device and its control & protection system for power system studies e.g. load flow, dynamic performance etc are described from practical power utility. The hardware-in-loop test has been carried out between RTDS and STACOM controller and actual site scenario.
