This paper proposes the use of synchrophasors for backup transmission line protection for ground faults and power swing detection. The proposed protection approach complements protective distance elements and is suitable for single-pole and three-pole tripping applications. The paper presents the synchrophasor- based protective element performance for challenging fault conditions such as cross-country faults with high fault resistance. The power swing detection algorithm this paper proposes
uses angle difference measurements and does not require setting traditional impedance-based out-of-step (OOS) characteristics.
