Abstract:
In the 1960’s through to the beginning of the 1990s, analog transient network analyzer (TNA) was used for AC and DC transmission studies. The cumbersome nature of such studies provided impetus to develop RTDS. The founders of RTDS Technologies were the developers of the first successful RTDS.
Changes are rapidly developing in the electric power system with the proliferation of power electronic equipment with their sensitive controls with potential of adverse interactions. The changes include the development of the Micro Grid and its challenges of control and protection, with the movement to solar and battery installations. Then there is the discussion of a continental super highway DC grid. RTDS must develop its applications to ensure the future delivery of electricity is reliable and robust.
With these changes, there is the challenge of testing equipment where controllers from competing manufacturers are connected in close proximity and this is a problem that RTDS can solve.
