Abstract:
This presentation will describe some interesting applied protection testing projects that have been carried out on behalf of power utilities using RTDS simulators, including: studying the performance of protection relay hardware under geomagnetically-induced current conditions; testing the security of capacitor bank protection relays; testing point-on-wave control relays for reinsertion of capacitor banks that are potentially still energised; factory acceptance testing of protection schemes.
In addition to providing an overview of these project applications in their own right, the presentation will focus on some interesting techniques, lessons learned, and scope for future developments and improvements to real-time models that have arisen out of these studies.
Amongst other issues, the presentation will discuss the need for accurate representation of multi-limb transformer cores in certain categories of real-time simulator testing; representing current transformers when testing high-impedance differential protection schemes; the use of scripting tools to automate large batches of tests carried out on protection schemes; techniques for simplifying user controls in complex simulation cases.
