The rapid deployment of massive converter-based resources, including offshore wind power plants and HVDC systems, is transforming power systems into highly complex and interconnected cyber-physical systems. Traditional offline studies and component-level testing are increasingly insufficient to assess the dynamic interactions among controllers, communication networks, and protection systems.
This presentation introduces the vision of the DTU Real-Time (RT) Center, a next-generation testing and research infrastructure designed to support large-scale real-time simulation and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing of converter-dominated power systems. It highlights how the ongoing development of IEC TS 61400-21-5 provides the first international standard for real-time testing of wind power plants. Building on this foundation, the RT Center aims to evolve from a wind power plant testing platform into a testing ground for system-wide studies. The infrastructure will enable plant testing, large-scale EMT studies, and the generation of large-scale datasets, supporting the reliable and intelligent operation of tomorrow’s power systems.
