Abstract:
End-to-end testing solutions should be implemented as utilities move towards new advanced applications for grid management systems to support in the evaluation and testing of those applications. Hardware-in-the-loop testing allows utilities to evaluate new technology in the context of their typical system operation using hardware and equipment according to their standards. SCE has implemented a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) test environment using Real Time Digital Simulators to evaluate advanced applications of SCE’s Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS).
A testbed of various distribution automation devices was integrated with an RSCAD model of three distribution feeder circuits and will be used to simulate scenarios to evaluate the ADMS advanced applications such as Fault Location Isolation and System Restoration (FLISR) and Load Volt/Var Management LVM. This presentation will provide details on the development of the RSCAD model and implementation of the HIL environment, as well as lessons learned from initial testing and validation of the testbed.
