Abstract:
Protection methods for HVDC networks have recently been the subject of intense research and development, including the development of protection algorithms for the detection and discrimination of HVDC faults. Industrial hardware to execute these protection algorithms, HVDC IEDs (otherwise known as relays), is under development to allow future HVDC systems to be adequately protected. The development of such devices is of interest, and an HVDC IED prototype (developed at KTH) will be discussed and presented.
Additionally, the test methods for such devices are not well developed (as opposed to test methods for AC IEDs which are well established). This presentation will examine the requirements for functional testing of HVDC IEDs, the associated real time modelling requirements, and test results will be shown from the prototype HVDC IED. A demonstration of the HVDC IED under test will be provided in the EnergyVille real time simulation lab during the UGM.
