Abstract:
With the addition of power electronic devices such as HVDC and FACTS, today’s power system has become increasingly complex. Sometimes, traditional study methods may not be adequate to study such systems. Accurate modelling of these devices is critical for the outcome of the study as the behavior of these devices is mainly governed by fast controllers. A new trend these days is for transmission owners to receive a control replica of these types of devices from the manufacturer in order to perform their studies. The electrical system of the device and the surrounding AC system are represented in the RTDS. It is important to model the surrounding AC system accurately in RTDS, and dynamic equivalencing plays an important role in this regard since it is not possible to represent the entire AC system in RTDS due to size limitations. This presentation will discuss the importance of dynamic equivalencing in AC system modelling for RTDS and its challenges. Also, the usage of the RTDS to test integrated AC systems will be presented.
