Abstract:
There is a growing momentum of smart grid deployments which incorporate extensive monitoring and control of highly-distributed energy resources, including at distribution systems and end-customer level. However, the highly distributed nature of renewable energy, and the exponential growth in the number of devices towards the extremities of distribution networks, means that conventional approaches for power system communications infrastructure are inadequate. Communications performance, in particular transmission delays, will impact power system control and protection decisions. To illustrate the interdependency of communications and the power system, this presentation shall discuss performance of a use case based on a smart grid application with a set of different communications configurations, and will demonstrate the progress that has been made towards developing an accurate, use-case focused, real-time communications emulation environment for integration with RTDS hardware.
