Abstract:
The electric power grid of the near-future will evolve into a very complex adaptive and reconfigurable system under semi-autonomous to autonomous control. Its spatial and temporal complexity, non-convexity, non-linearity, non-stationarity, variability and uncertainties exceed the characteristics found in today’s traditional power system. The distributed energy resources and its management add complexity and challenges to its modeling, control and optimization. Innovative technologies such as real-time simulation and emulation are needed to understand the growing complexity such as stochastic bidirectional optimal power flows, and develop strategies for maximization utilization of available renewable energy in combination with energy storage including PEVs.
The development of innovative optimization and control methods for power system operations where the application of real-time simulation studies is meaningful will be discussed in this talk.
